Perdure is a self paced, mentored and individual UI UX capstone project that started from choosing a problem statement to coming up with a medium fidelity prototype of red routes of the final solution.

Problem Space

Today, waste generation by individual households has increased tremendously and subsequently has been filling up 1/3rd of our available landfills...
1

Individuals lack the opportunity to actively participate in community waste management

2

Communities do not include waste management as an integral requisite within their space

3

Individuals are more likely to take certain actions when incentivized with rewards rather than punishment

Design Research

After choosing a problem area, the first step involved creating a research plan with goals, background, methodologies and certain questions that I needed to get answered through secondary research and heursitic analysis of competitors.

After the secondary research, I created a list of interview questions and participants for interviews were shortlisted using screener surveys. The following are the characteristics of the interviewees :
Living in tier 1 or tier 2 cities in India
Aged between 18 and 28
Has basic awareness of the environmental impacts of waste
Consumer of packaged goods
Has at least some interest in practicing waste management

The reason I created a screen survey to recruit interviewees was to eliminate any bias I may have held and to make sure I am getting information from people who belong in the intended audience group.

User Interviews

To create this affinity map, I categorized all the insights that I heard from the interviewees into observations, insights and direct quotes using different colours to represent each category.

Step 1: Categorizing interviewee notes into observations ( purple ), insights ( green ) and quotes ( pink )

Step 2: Identifying the points to create various themes based on the type of information using the smaller colored stickies on each post it note

Step 3: Grouping the post it notes that belong to the same theme based on the color of the smaller stickies

Step 4: The final four themes were - blue ( dos and dont's), yellow ( new ideas), orange (resource problems) and lastly what has to change ?

Synthesizing
Research

Insights

"Landfills in Bangalore are getting filled up too fast "

" Wet waste takes up unnecessary space in landfills "

" Since landfills are getting full too fast, garbage trucks are offloading garbage on lonely road "

" People who have backyards could reuse waste in compost pits "

Finding 1 : Landfills are filling up too fast, increasing need to reuse waste in individual household levels

Insights

"It might be difficult for individual houses to do something but larger communities can do their part "

"My community hardly has empty dustbins, I always keep my dry waste in my bag"

Finding 2 : Apartments and buildings need to incorporate waste management in their building design

Insights

"Many times I end up buying products just for a one time use"

"I wish to recycle products but it takes a lot of effort and I have not found a convenient method to do so"

" Half my trash is products I have never used in my life "

Finding 2 : Individuals are aware of the avoidable trash that they generate and wish to engage in waste management practices

Problem
Statement

How might we....

encourage individuals to participate in community waste management methods so that they directly contribute to the reduction of household waste generated every year ?

Key Features

The main phases of the concept development included creating a persona, drafting a customer journey map to understand pain points and opportunities at various touch points and redesign the information architecture to one that is more intuitive and less complicated.

Red Routes

The storyboard was created in order to craft the story/narrative of the concept. This aims to highlight all the solution use cases with the key features being given extra importance in each scenario.  The following are the major use cases :
